About Etch Developer

Etch Developer is a free library of components, plugins and PHP snippets for Etch, the visual development environment for WordPress made by Digital Gravy. One person runs it: me, Tom Chmiel. The site is not affiliated with Etch or its makers.

Why this site exists

Etch reached version 1.0 in January 2026 and is still actively developed, but plenty of what a client site needs isn’t built in yet. Many of these components started as things I built for my own projects, so I publish them here, tested and with a changelog. Other Etch developers shouldn’t have to build the same things twice.

Process

How the components are made

  1. Every component has a version number and a changelog. It is tested with a keyboard, with screen readers and on desktop and mobile browsers, and its page lists what was tested and what wasn't.

  2. In the Etch builder, every prop change has to show on the canvas without saving. The file you download is exported from Etch and test-imported cleanly before it goes up.

  3. When an Etch update breaks something, the fix goes out as a new version. Pasting a new version doesn't update a copy that's already on a site, so the newsletter tells you when a fix is out.

Licenses

You can use and modify the components on any personal, client or commercial site, including paid client work. You can't sell them as components or include them in a competing product such as a component library, bundle or marketplace listing. The license is FSL-1.1-MIT, and each version becomes MIT two years after its release. Plugins and PHP snippets are licensed GPL-2.0-or-later.
